Historically home to the prosperous Chettiar community, it flourished as a center of trade, blending indigenous Tamil craftsmanship with global influences from Burma, Sri Lanka, and Europe. The grand Chettinad mansions, built with intricate woodwork, handmade Athangudi tiles, and Italian marble, showcase a unique architectural identity.
